Chemical Principles
Hot-dip galvanizing consists of coating and bonding steel with zinc by immersing the steel in a molten zinc bath at approximately 450 \u00b0C.
This process does not merely consist of depositing a few micrometers of zinc on the surface of the steel. The zinc coating is chemically bonded to the base steel, as a metallurgical diffusion reaction occurs between the zinc and the iron or steel at 450 \u00b0C. When the steel is removed from the zinc bath, several layers of zinc\u2013iron alloys form on its surface, upon which the carried-over zinc solidifies. These different alloy layers, some of which are harder than the base steel, contain an increasingly higher proportion of zinc as one moves closer to the surface of the coating.
